South Carolina Law Enforcement Accreditation

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Accreditation (SCLEA) was created in 1999 and offers a program through which South Carolina law enforcement agencies can evaluate, strengthen, improve and maintain their effectiveness. It not only makes a statement that the highest standards of law enforcement are being met, but it also demonstrates agency responsiveness to community needs. Specific benefits include:

• Controlled liability insurance costs
• Defense against lawsuits and citizen complaints
• Support from governmental officials
• Increased community confidence, respect and advocacy
• Access to the latest methods developed by law enforcement experts
• Precise written manual of policies and procedures
• Better managed department
• Higher morale among personnel

The cost of the program is $50 (application fee) and covers all materials, forms, contracts, and administrative costs. In addition to the application fee, agencies are also responsible for their self-assessment and on-site costs.
